Way overpriced

You can buy an 8 1/2 inch ceramic rod at eBay for $3-4 including shipping. It would come with no handle but the Kyocera has a cheap plastic handle and actually you don't really need one. Works the same. Make sure you hold it vertically and make passes on both sides. Finish up the micro teeth on a lather strop or using an old leather belt.
Effectively maintains edge

Does its job of keeping the edge on a relatively sharp knife. It is too fine to really sharpen a dull knife though. On the plus side, it barely removes any material from the blade, so there is no risk of ruining a knife by using the wrong angle. Giving it 4 stars because the ribbed side arrived chipped at the edge.
Nice item

First, I have to say that I don't actually use the sharpening side of this device, I just use it for honing my blade after sharpening with an AccuSharp 001 Knife Sharpener. For this use, the Kyocera works great. I'm perfectly happy with it.
Good product

I purchased this sharpening rod to maintain my Seki Magoroku series knives. The sharpening rod is well made, very light, and is easy to use.
Functionally, I see nothing wrong with this Kyocera ceramic sharpening rod, but aesthetically, I do not like how knives leave dark stains on the white rod, making it look dirty. If the manufacturer used charcoal or black ceramic material, I'd rate this sharpening rod 5 stars.
UPDATE 11/1/2009: You have to be careful storing this sharpening rod. I kept mine in a drawer with other utensils and it got chipped. |
Very thick, effective sharpener

I was surprised at the thickness of this ceramic rod. It really restores an edge to a knife, and quickly. Well worth having.
